Car Yards Reduce Water Usage Under Stage 4 Water Restrictions
Central Highlands Water has reported a significant reduction in mains water usage by the region’s car yards since the introduction of stage 4 Water Restrictions in Ballarat last year.
Car yards in the Ballarat region have reduced their mains water consumption by half in the last five months, saving the Ballarat Water Supply about three million litres of water per year.
Central Highlands Water Chief Executive Officer, Mr Neil Brennan says many car yards are saving thousands of litres of water and have developed their own individual water saving initiatives as they, and the entire community, adapt to the ongoing and unpredictable drought conditions.
He says it is pleasing to see many businesses proactively saving the region’s precious water supply and putting plans in place to ensure they use the potable water supply efficiently whilst using other sources of water, not subject to water restrictions, for non-potable purposes.
“It is pleasing that businesses and residents are taking socially responsible action and now saving large amounts of water in their daily practices, which is to be commended,” said Mr Brennan.
Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce Area Manager, Bernard Murray says in addition to adopting waterwise initiatives many car yards have installed rainwater tanks as an alternative water source not subject to water restrictions.
“Our members have adapted to the extremely dry conditions and implemented a range of water saving measures to reduce their water consumption and ease pressure on the Ballarat Water Supply,” said Mr Murray.
