NAME: Water-Saving Showers
LOCATION: Bathroom, ensuite, guest rooms
COST: From several dollars for a water-saving disc and from about $30 for a water-saving shower rose
AVAILABLE FROM: Water-saving shower roses and water-saving discs are available from a large range of plumbing suppliers and hardware shops.
WATER SAVING ACTION: A water-saving shower rose or water-saving disc will save approximately 50% of water use compared to an older style shower rose, which may use up to 20 litres of water per minute. This may not sound much, but for a family this could result in saving about 40,000 litres of water every year! Modern, high efficiency shower roses provide a comfortable stream of water with good wetting and rinsing characteristics, using about 9 litres of water per minute. This will save water and energy costs with every shower. For a cheaper alternative, you can buy a water-saving disc for just a few dollars to fit into your existing shower head.
WATER RESTRICTIONS: Water restrictions do not apply to water used inside the home, only to water used outside the home. However, the majority of water a family uses will be from water used inside the home and many customers are aware of the need to save water inside as well. Bathrooms typically use about 25% of a households water, so installing a water efficient shower rose is a great way to easily save lots of water indoors. And the State Government offers a $10 rebate on the purchase of any AAA rated water-efficient shower rose through the Water Smart Gardens and Homes Rebate Scheme.
